Summertime Snacks for Fido

As summer rolls on, many of us are looking for ways to beat the heat. Indulging in the occasional ice cream cone or other frozen snack can be a great way to cool off on hot days! Our canine friends can get pretty hot during the dog days of summer, so your furry pal might also enjoy a cool treat now and then. In this article, a local Cameron Park, CA veterinarian lists a few summertime snacks Fido can enjoy.

Pupsicles

There are tons of fun variations of this frozen canine treat. Try freezing small doggy snacks; bits of kibble; cheese; or small pieces of cooked, unseasoned meat in water or sodium-free beef or chicken broth. You can even use thin chew sticks! Use an ice cube tray or wax paper cups to mold them. Give Fido one or two on hot days. Don’t give your canine too many frozen treats at once, as too much ice could make him sick.

Water

To give Fido a special treat, freeze sodium-free beef or chicken broth in an ice cube tray, and then add a cube or two to your furry pal’s water. Just be sure not to leave it out for longer than an hour or two, as you don’t want bacteria to form.

Doggy Ice Cream

You can find ice cream for Fido in many pet stores or grocery stores. You can also make your own using a base of yogurt. For flavor, mix with honey or peanut butter, and add bacon bits; sodium-free broth; cheese; or cooked, beef, steak or chicken. You can also include dog-safe fruits and veggies like blueberries or carrots. Just be sure to do your research first to ensure you’re choosing safe ingredients.

Cheeseburger Bites

Mix cooked, unseasoned beef or turkey with cheese, and then add water or broth to thin it out. Use an ice cube tray to shape the mixture. On really hot days, dole out a few of these cool treats to your furry pal.

Cold Toys

Puzzle toys, such as Kong toys, can keep our canine friends amused for hours. To make Fido’s plaything even more fun, smear peanut butter on the inside, add some water and a few doggy treats, and then freeze it.
