9 Key Points of Great Dog Care

Did you know that almost half of American households have dogs? Fido has many wonderful qualities, so it’s no wonder that he’s such a popular pet. Taking care of our canine buddies isn’t difficult: providing your pooch with food, water, and shelter will cover his most essential needs. Great dog care goes far beyond these basics, however. Below, a Cameron Park, CA veterinarian discusses some important aspects of Fido’s care.

Basics

Proper nutrition is very important. Ask your vet for specific recommendations. Fido should also have plenty of fresh water at all times, as well as a comfy bed.

Veterinary Care

Fido should see the vet at least once a year, though some dogs may need more frequent appointments. In between visits, watch for any possible signs of sickness, and call your vet immediately if you notice anything amiss.

ID

Make sure your dog is microchipped, and is wearing proper ID tags. If Fido ever gets lost, that identification could save his life!

Training

All dogs should know basic obedience commands, like Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down. If Fido doesn’t have these down yet, work with him until he does.

Stimulation

Dogs are very intelligent, and can get bored and restless with nothing to do. Offer your pooch plenty of fun toys, and take time to play with him daily.

Grooming

Keeping Fido’s fur free of dirt and tangles will not only keep him looking great, it will also maximize the insulating properties of his fur, which will help keep him comfortable.

Home Care

Don’t forget about your pet’s home health care! Keep up with Fido’s parasite control. Nail trims and dental care are also very important.

Activity

All of our canine pals have different exercise needs. Some dogs need at least 30 minutes of vigorous activity a day, while others only require a short walk. Fido’s specific activity requirements will depend on his breed, age, health, and weight. Ask your vet for recommendations.

TLC

Fido won’t be truly happy unless he feels loved. Spend time with your furry BFF: play with him, talk to him, and get that itch he can’t quite reach. You’ll be repaid with tail wags and unconditional love, which are both priceless gifts in our book.
