National Puppy Day

There’s a very special—and adorable—holiday coming up! March 23rd is National Puppy Day! If you’ve recently adopted a puppy, you are definitely in for some cute moments in the coming year. A Cameron Park, CA vet discusses puppy care below.

Veterinary Care

Little Fido will need to come in a few times during that crucial first year. We recommend that both dogs and cats be microchipped and spayed or neutered while they are still young. It’s also important to keep up with your pet’s vaccinations, exams, and parasite control products. Ask your vet for more information.

Training

Training should start right away. Little Fido will need to be housebroken. Crate training is strongly recommended as well. You’ll also want to make sure the little guy knows basic doggy obedience commands, such as Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down.

Socialization

Proper socialization will play a crucial role in your pet’s mental and emotional development. Exposing your puppy to new places and faces while he is young will help him form a positive, friendly attitude. Invite friends with gentle dogs over for a puppy party, or enroll your pooch in doggy daycare.

Chewing

Teething will be a fairly major event in little Fido’s life over the next year. Offer your furry friend lots of safe, suitable chew toys.

Puppyproofing

Little Fido will be very curious about his new domain, and will want to know exactly what he can and can’t eat or play with. Make your home safe for your canine buddy by removing or securing dangerous items, such as toxic plants; plastic bags and wrappers; chemicals; medication; and small or sharp objects.

Petiquette

Be sure to nip bad habits in the bud. Don’t punish your pup for misbehaving: instead, focus on rewarding good behavior. Ask your vet or a professional dog behaviorist for tips.

Tail Wags

Enjoy this fun time in your pet’s life. Puppies are very lovable and playful. They are also one of the cutest things on the planet! Spend lots of time with your canine pal. Pet him, play with him, and offer lots of ear scritches and belly rubs. Don’t forget to take lots of pictures: your furry little toddler will be all grown up before you know it!
