Walk Your Dog Week

The first week of October is Walk Your Dog Week! Daily walks are good for both you and your pet. Read on as a Cameron Park, CA vet discusses taking Fido for a stroll.

Benefits of Walking

For many pet parents, daily walks are a must, simply for sanitary purposes. However, they’re also crucial to Fido’s health and well-being. For one thing, they give your pet a good daily workout, which is very important for his health. Walking also offers Fido beneficial mental stimulation. Dogs can pick up a lot of information by sniffing grass! Last but not least, this is a great way for you to bond with your pup and spend some quality time with him.

Always put your dog’s safety first. Training is first and foremost here. Teaching Fido important commands like Stay, Heel, and Come can help you stop him from running off or approaching dangerous areas. Also, keep an eye on the ground. Go around anything that could be hazardous, like broken glass. Last but not least, don’t let your furry friend sniff foxtail grass or other dangerous plants.

Doggy paw pads are very sensitive. Keep Fido’s nails trimmed: this will help him get better traction. In hot weather, keep your pooch on soft ground as much as possible, and use paw wax to protect his feet. Ask your vet for more information.

Make sure your canine buddy has a sturdy leash. Collars are fine for many dogs, but some pooches—such as small dogs and brachycephalic pups—are better off in harnesses. Ask your vet for advice.

We have a few tricks up our sleeves when it comes to dog care. One way to make your dog-walking duties a bit easier is to designate a bag or jacket for walking Fido. Keep treats, waste baggies, a flashlight, spare keys, and anything else you may need in the pockets. That way, you only have to grab one thing on your way out the door. You may also want to clip a carabiner onto Fido’s leash. That way, if you stop to chat, you can tie your pet to a tree or fence. (Note: never leave your dog unattended, even for just a few minutes.)
