Homemade Holiday Gifts for Pets

With the holidays approaching fast, many people are trying to pick out perfect gifts for their loved ones. This can be a tough task! Pets also deserve special presents. After all, they’re part of the family. If you’re working with a tight budget, or just like being crafty, you can make your animal companion’s gifts yourself. Read on as a Cameron Park, CA vet lists some great DIY gifts for pets.

Beds are at or near the top of the list of Fluffy’s favorite things. You can make your kitty a cute bed out of a hardshell suitcase, hatbox, or wicker basket. Add paint or varnish to make it look nice. You can also offer your furball a DIY cat tower. Get an old stepladder, bookshelf, or metal storage rack. Add planks to widen out the shelves, and cover it with carpet or sisal rope.

Rope toys are very popular with our canine companions. Get a few old, clean tee shirts or towels, and cut them into thin strips. Then, braid the strips together, and braid the braids together. Tie it off with a big not. Voila! Happy puppy.

Pocket Pets

Bunnies, gerbils, Guinea pigs, hamsters, mice, and rats all have open-rooted teeth. These little guys need to chew a lot to prevent painful dental issues. Cardboard can make great chew toys! Cut up the tube from a toilet paper or paper towel roll into thin strips, and reassemble them as a small ball. Put a yummy treat inside to make it extra fun. You can also offer your pint-sized pet crumpled up sheets of copy paper. Put them in a shoebox or a paper grocery bag if you like.

Polly spends a lot of time in her cage, so it’s important to make it fun for her by offering her lots of toys. String some fun, safe objects together on a piece of twine. You can include things like playing cards, shower curtain rings, rice cakes, popsicle sticks, and plastic bottlecaps. Another option is to hang a phone book up in your pet’s cage and just let her have at it.

Be sure to only offer your pet things that are safe for them! Ask your vet for specific advice.
