Keeping Fluffy Cool

Summer can be pretty tough on our feline pals. Fluffy is not only wearing a fur coat, she also can’t sweat to cool herself off. Overheating can be extremely dangerous for cats, so you’ll want to take steps to keep your kitty cool. A Cameron Park, CA vet offers some tips on how to do that below.

Fluffy’s pretty coat actually protects her from the heat. Dust, dander, and dead fur can get hot and itchy, though. Brushing your furry diva daily will help her stay cool.

Make sure that Fluffy always has fresh water. Some cats prefer to drink running water. (This may be because in the wild, standing water is more likely to be bad.) Consider getting your furball a kitty fountain. If you let your furry buddy go outdoors, keep a water bowl outside for her as well. Clean your cat’s water bowls daily, as they’ll otherwise collect dust, bugs, and bacteria.

Cold Snacks

Ice cream really isn’t an appropriate treat for kitties, but you can give your kitty some chilled cat milk or sodium-free broth. Fluffy may also like a can of cold tuna in water.

Kitty Hammock

Want to get your furry friend’s motor going? Make a kitty hammock! Get a table or end table with four legs, and a piece of sturdy material. Cut the material so that it’s just a bit smaller than the tabletop, and then attach the corners to the legs.

Ice Cubes

Drop an ice cube into Fluffy’s bowl to cool her water off on hot days. Your kitty may also enjoy batting an ice cube around. Cats use their paw pads to regulate their temperature, so this is actually a good way for your furball to cool off.

Keep Kitty In

Although Fluffy may love fun summer activities like rolling around in the dirt and ignoring you when you call her, she’s really better off staying in. Keep your cat safe and sound indoors, in rooms cooled by fans and air conditioners.

Nighttime Play Sessions

While it’s likely impossible to actually overexert a cat, it’s best not to encourage Fluffy to run or play too much during the hottest part of the day. Save that game of Catch The Red Dot for evening, when its cooler out.
