Pain Management

At Veterinary Healing Center, we have a special interest in the management of acute and chronic pain in our patients. Pain can be especially challenging to understand and quantify in animals. Many pets that are experiencing pain will not show obvious signs of discomfort.  Instead, they may be slowing down, sleeping more, grooming less, or seem restless at night. Any of these behaviors may indicate that your pet is experiencing some level of pain.

Whether your pet has new injury, has recently undergone surgery, or has a more chronic condition such as arthritis, we have many ways to help. Both Dr. Cahoon and Dr. McKerney have taken advanced continuing education courses in an effort to provide our patients with current and effective pain management strategies. We pride ourselves in our ability to provide cutting edge western diagnostics and therapeutics, as well as the ability to integrate options such as acupuncture, laser therapy, herbal therapy, food therapy, Platelet Rich Plasma infusion, and stem cell therapy.

There are many types of pain that companion animals experience. Here are a few examples:

  • Acute pain (new injury, trauma)
  • Surgical pain
  • Soft tissue (strain or sprain)
  • Ear Infections and skin allergies
  • Dental disease and gingivitis
  • Neuropathic (nerve)
  • Degenerative joint disease and arthritis
  • Neoplasia (cancer)

When your pet has a surgical procedure performed at Veterinary Healing Center, they will be receiving individualized care and a surgical plan tailored to their specific needs.  This starts with a physical exam, blood work, and surgical planning weeks (and sometimes months) prior to your pet’s procedure date. The day of the procedure we will work to minimize your pet’s anxiety by providing an anesthetic protocol that is specifically designed for them. Minimizing discomfort before, during, and after the procedure in the recovery phase is of the utmost importance to us.

If you feel your pet may be experiencing some level of pain or discomfort, please call to set up an appointment for an evaluation and discussion with one of our doctors. Our number one goal is to help your pet live his or her best life!!

We have taken all three of our dogs to Dr. Cahoon and Dr. McKerney over the past 6 years - they have kept them healthy and happy through all manner of health conditions and injuries and our 15 year golden mix would not be able to walk without the acupuncture and laser treatments they provide. They love our dogs and always spend time with us to explain what is going on. Highly recommend!

The Veterinary Healing Center in El Dorado Hills is fantastic. My cat Marshmallow and I have been with them for a year. I brought Marshmallow there for a second opinion about his breathing problems because of asthma and upper respiratory issues. He was getting injections about every 6 weeks, and those many trips to the vet were very stressful on him. Dr. McKerney, took Marshmallow off the injections - steroids and convenia – and put him on a tablet of doxycycline. She felt that his main issue is upper respiratory. Marsh has not had any breathing problems for a year, and he is happy to take his pill in a pill pocket! I have such a positive experience when Marshmallow and I visit. Marsh is not the best behaved patient, and Dr. McKerney is wonderful and is always so patient and gentle with him, and the staff is patient and gentle with him, too – I am grateful, and thankful!!
